Is there Science in the Bible. Wait for class to answer
Before I get started today, I need to respond to some questions I have gotten on the internet about my education and credentials.
For those of you that don’t know. I have loved science and math since I was a young child. I love nature and how things work. I worked in research labs when I was in college. I have a PhD in Chemical Engineering. As such I have taken more chemistry than many chemistry majors. I know organic, biochemistry, inorganic, and physical chemistry. I’ve done research in materials at both the atomic level and macro materials level. I have invented, discovered, and developed technologies. I have worked as a professional engineer for more than 25 years. I am proudly a scientist and engineer, and a Christian. I have a personal technical library that fills several bookcases, which I have studied and use professionally. That does not even break the surface of the technical articles I’ve read and written. So, yes, I know science and I do science. I just don’t see science the way atheist scientists and engineers do. I also have a master’s and doctorate degree in Theology. So, at a minimum I have the credentials to talk about science and technology, as well as theology and philosophy. Now I don’t think you need my credentials to talk about these things, but for those who want credentials, I have the credentials. My focus is all about application of knowledge, not just knowing for knowing but using knowledge which becomes wisdom.
There is one constant across all disciplines. People disagree and interpret things differently. However, the burden of proof is equal. Many say there is no God? My response is what evidence do you have? Ok you don’t like my evidence but where is yours. Let’s use the cumulative case scientific approach.
Many say the Bible is not reliable or made up or whatever. My response is what evidence do you have to back up your claims. Ok you don’t like my evidence but where is yours. Let’s use the cumulative case scientific approach and see whose support is more compelling. The classic argument is if I can see it, touch it, test it in a laboratory then it does not exist. Well, I say that excludes everything because science itself cannot be any of these things. We have to take logic, reason, mathematics, the laws of nature, consciousness and about everything else for granted in order to make that claim. We could not even process what we see or touch without the intangible things we have to assume first.
Many say Jesus is not God, then who was He? The skeptic must have an answer. CS Lewis famously said, “Jesus is either a liar, lunatic, or Lord.” You have to choose. I say what evidence do you have to back up your claim. Ok you don’t like my evidence but where is yours. Let’s use the cumulative case scientific approach and see what is more reasonable.
Today we are going to talk science. Specifically, the hidden science in the Bible. And the archeology that supports the Bible.
Two things to remember as we talk today. Why are there no Archeological finds that disprove the Bible? Why are there not Archaeological finds that prove stories in the Bible are wrong? This is a tough question for the skeptic. Christian knows that a lack of evidence is not evidence but rather evidence yet to be found.
And an even tougher question for the skeptics, what are the origins of their religion of science or even their favorite specific scientific discipline they love so much. I’m going to show you a few today
This is not even a complete list of the Science that is shown in the Bible hundreds if not thousands of years before the birth of the modern science as we know it. I think you will be surprised by some of these. I was. But for the doubter who says, only science can explain things. We can actually say, yes of course Christianity is the source of modern science. Arguably, modern science would not exist without the Bible. Let me show you just a few of these amazing hidden scientific facts buried in our Bible. Many of these were the inspiration of the early scientists who founded the areas of study as we know them today.
First, Paleontology (the Behemoth and the Leviathan from Job 40 & 41. Let’s look closer at the Behemoth. Job 40:15-24 NIV “Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox. What strength it has in its loins, what power in the muscles of its belly! Its tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are close-knit. Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like rods of iron. It ranks first among the works of God, yet its Maker can approach it with his sword. The hills bring it their produce, and all the wild animals play nearby. Under the lotus plants it lies, hidden among the reeds in the marsh. The lotuses conceal it in their shadow; the poplars by the stream surround it. A raging river does not alarm it; it is secure, though the Jordan should surge against its mouth. Can anyone capture it by the eyes, or trap it and pierce its nose?”
This clip is from the movie Jurassic Park. So, you tell me does the tail look like a cedar, “Its tail sways like a cedar”. What do you think. Or “its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like rods of iron.” This thing was huge. (wait for clip to end 30s)
“what strength it has in its loins, what power in the muscles of its belly” you can see the strength in the belly and rear legs. Huge Bones. Is this the Behemoth? I tend to think so. Dinosaurs in the Bible. I’ve been told that they can see from the bones the density of muscle fibers around those bones. The belly and rear legs had huge dense muscles. Just look at it. This is a great recreation of how it probably moved and consistent with what the Bible says.
“Under the lotus plants it lies, hidden among the reeds in the marsh. The lotuses conceal it in their shadow; the poplars by the stream surround it.” These giant animals are thought to be partially aquatic or at least in and out of the water.
verse 18, “Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like rods of iron.” You can see from the picture of the Brachiosaurus; the leg bones are huge. But they are also incredibly dense and thus strong. Much denser than say human bones because they were huge and heavy. Limbs are like rods of iron and bones like tubes of bronze. And modern science agrees that it’s true. Now people will challenge my opinion, regardless these amazing creatures could be what God is referring to as the Behemoh.
My girls wanted me to add this one. The Leviathan this is a truncated version of Job 41:1-15NIV “Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook or tie down its tongue with a rope? Can you put a cord through its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook? ……Can you fill its hide with harpoons or its head with fishing spears? If you lay a hand on it, you will remember the struggle and never do it again! Any hope of subduing it is false; the mere sight of it is overpowering. No one is fierce enough to rouse it. …… Everything under heaven belongs to me. I will not fail to speak of Leviathan’s limbs, its strength and its graceful form. Who can strip off its outer coat? Who can penetrate its double coat of armor a ? Who dares open the doors of its mouth, ringed about with fearsome teeth? Its back has b rows of shields tightly sealed together;”
People argue about this one, crocodile, dragon, but could it be this the Mosasaurus.
Job 41:14-15 “Who dares open the doors of its mouth, ringed about with fearsome teeth?; Its back has rows of shields tightly sealed together;”

So what do you think. Fearsome teeth, mouth like great doors, back rowed with shields. And there is more. I also know that there is language in the description that sounds like it breaths fire or shoots light from its eyes. I can’t say for certain what is being described in Job, but this is one possibility. Whatever it was, the writer of Job new about it, long before these paleontology discoveries.
What about Oceanography. Psalm 18:15 (NIV) “The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth”. This does not seem like much until you realize that until around 1500’s most people thought the ocean bottom was like this.
In ancient times, people thought the land slowly dropped off into a sandy bowl like sea bottom, In the 1500;’s and 1600’s people began diving into deeper waters and discovered the topography below but David wrote this Psalm around 1000BC. That is more than 2500 years before science discovered what the Bible was already saying. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that we discovered the deep trenches and valleys in the ocean.
Here is a picture of Marianas Trench in Pacific ocean near Guam. Psalm 18:15 (NIV) “The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth”.
What about the fountains of the deep. From Genesis 7 flood story.
What about Genesis 7:11 the flood story. “…—on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.”(NIV). These are actual freshwater springs or fountains under the ocean. Science did not discover these until the 1977 off the coast of Ecuador. But Moses talked about this in the Flood story from about 4000 years ago. I think the Bible has been consistently a little ahead of modern Science don’t you think.
How about this in Job 38:16 (NIV) “Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?”. Here is a hot springs or fountains under the ocean. Fountains of the Deep.
What about this from Jonah. “You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me. I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’ The engulfing waters threatened me, a the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit.” Jonah 2:3-6 NIV. Did you see the science?
Modern science has mapped the ocean floors only to discover what the Bible was saying all along. Now we know with Jonah was told by God. “to the roots of the mountains I sank down.”
how about here is Job 38:16 (NIV) “Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?”. Again ,springs in the sea and recesses of the deep. Describes what we have seen pretty accurately don’t you think. But remember Job was written 4,000 years ago at least. Maybe even old, predating the flood story.
or here is 2 Samuel 22:16 “The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of breath from his nostrils.
